K Slotcar 2026 F1 Championship

F1 racing was on Sunday.  As always, in this class there’s a free choice of chassis and motors.  This year just about the whole field were running brushless motors although a few bought along their strap motor cars as back ups.

Best presented was won by Mick Metalfe with this Racing Bull paint job on a Betta McLaren shell.

Qualifying

Josh Bryant was top qualifier lapping in 6.068 second followed by James Cleave (6,097) and Ross Grogan ( 6.115). Graham Woodward was the fastest main grade qualifier on 6.393 for 13th overall.

Pat Skene and Paul Lyon had motor failures in qualifying so didn’t set times.

As in Saloon, the record times set last year weren’t beaten. It seems the track was running a little slower than last year?

Heats

David Farrow won the first heat from Nick Thrower.  Paul Harwood went some 12 laps faster to win the second heat from Stephen Rhodes and Steve Pratt.  Richard Mack won the third heat from top clubman Richard Beamish.  Barry Gilzean and Greg Harwood finished 1-2 in the fourth heat, just ahead of both Richards’ scores.   James Noakes won the fifth heat by a lap from Mark Harwood, with Ben Woodward third some 6 laps behind Mark, all 3 beat Barry’s time.

James Cleave won the top heat by 4 laps from Josh Bryant, Gavin Wills, Ross Grogan and Simon Scott.   Those 5 qualified for the overall final, and were joined by James, Mark and Ben from the fifth heat.

Main Grade Final

Mark Steventon led the first segment, Mick Metcalfe took the lead by quarter distance.   Top qualifier Graham Woodward took the lead once he got onto the middle lanes after a white-red lane start.  Graham maintained his lead from Mick and Mark till segment 6 when he reached the outside purple and black lanes.   Mick retook the lead till the last segment when he had his turn on a less favoured lane and Graham  won by 2½ laps.  Mark S held third till ¾ distance but finished on two outside lanes when he was passed by Richard Beamish and Mark Croston.  Sixth and seventh places were contested by Steve Pratt and Keith Gibson  for most of the race, while Stephen Rhodes was unlucky to retire by half distance.

Final

James Cleave led the overall final from Josh Bryant from the start,  James opened up a 6 lap lead going into the final segment, Josh had a rapid final segment and James won by just under 4 laps.  James takes the F1 title for the fourth year in a row.  Initially Ross Grogan was third ahead of Gavin Wills, but Gavin took third 5 laps behind Josh while  Ross dropped to sixth at  the end.  Simon Scott and James Noake contested fourth and fifth for much of the race, Simon finished ahead by just under a lap.  The unfortunate retirements were  Ben Woodward and Mark Harwood.

The off centre motor is an unusual feature of these Recek chassis.

Another trend in a lot of the latest chassis is the front wheels are further forward.   Some of the previously popular bodies are difficult to fit on the longer wheelbase cars.
