Dunfermline 1/32 BOC Meeting, 22 Mar 2026

We were delighted to welcome 16 racers to the Ecurie Barnton / Dunfermline 1/32 BOC meeting this year.

 Saloon

Ross Grogan dominated qualifying in Saloon with a stunning fastest lap of 5.064 sec, almost 2-tenths faster than anyone else.

Steve Sargent wasn’t at his best in qualifying, but he dominated the D-final and set a very respectable early target of 119.16 laps, more than 10 laps ahead of Dave Wood, Nick Cunningham and Colin Jackson. In the C-final, Gordon Dickson and Gavin Scott pulled ahead early on and had a close race throughout. They were also slightly ahead of Steve’s schedule. Ultimately, Gordon took the win with 121.84 from Gavin on 121.67. Ant Hawkes and Barry Gilzean were 3rd and 4th in this race, both slower than Steve.

Josh Bryant was fastest qualifier for the B-final and set fast lap times during the race, but consistency was sadly lacking and he was always trailing behind Paul Shepherd and Simon Scott. Shep led most of the way, but Simon stayed close and pounced in the final segment, taking the win by just 25 feet with 124.42 laps. This would eventually give him 4th overall. Josh’s score of 114.30 was well down on his potential and would prove costly in the final analysis. Paul Lyon also struggled to match his qualifying performance, his car seeming to get slower and slower as the race wore on.

Richy Kettleson made a storming start to the A-final, leading by just over half a lap after one segment. Behind him, Ross and Martin Ellis were just 10 feet apart. Ross stepped up his pace when he moved to Yellow lane next. Richy still led at half distance, but now only 4 feet ahead of Ross. Martin was now a lap and a half down, but half a lap ahead of Will Stemmen. Richy’s hopes of winning suffered from a relatively poor run on White in segment 3, falling behind not only Ross but also Martin. Meanwhile Will suffered damage and was forced to retire. Martin finished the race strongly, nibbling away at Ross’s lead, but Ross had plenty in hand and took the win by just over a lap. Ritchy took 3rd place, and 1st in Main Grade.

 Formula 1

Two people opted out of racing F1, leaving us with 14 entrants, so we had 5 in each of the C and B finals (with one sit-out), and 4 in the A final.

Shep led all the way in the C-final, winning it with 118.86, 6 laps ahead of Steve. In the B-final, Richy made a great start and led Simon by half a lap after one segment. Simon upped his pace in segment 2 and led Richy by half a lap at half distance. Thereafter, Richy seemed to suffer from a serious lack of grip and fell back, whereas Simon went from strength to strength and finished with 122.44 laps. Eventually Simon would take 4th overall, Shep 5th, and Richy 6th & 1st in Main Grade again.

In the A-final, Josh made a storming start on White lane, setting the fastest segment of the race and taking a one-lap lead over Ross, with pole-qualifier Will another half lap down. Josh found it a bit harder when he moved to Blue, and at half distance he was only 4 feet ahead of Ross and 31 feet ahead of Will. However, Ross & Will both fell back in segment 3 and Josh established a commanding lead of 2 and a half laps. Will finished strongly to narrow the gap a little and pull ahead of Ross, the top 3 at the end being Josh, Will and Ross in that order. What of the other A-finalist, I hear you ask. Well Martin couldn’t keep up with the top 3, but he was beating most other people until a pit stop left him in 11th place with one segment to go. He regrouped though and climbed a couple of places to finish 9th. This would prove significant in the final analysis…

 Sports / GT

We were back to a full complement of 16 for Sports, so 4 finals again. Nick dominated the D-final, leading all the way and winning with 126.85. Gavin was equally dominant in the C-final, but faster, setting an impressive target of 145.60.

We would witness another dominant drive in the B-final, this time from Martin, but his was on another level again. He averaged more than 40 laps per segment, and his final score of 161.52 broke James Cleave’s lap record for 4 x 3 minutes, set in 2022, by more than a lap. Behind him, Richy and Simon had a close battle for the first half of the race, before Richy lost time with a pit stop (I think). Simon had a strong last segment to move just ahead of Gavin in the overall positions.

Beating Martin’s lap-record score was obviously going to be a challenge for the A-finalists, but Ross was more than up for it for the first half of the race, scoring more than 40 laps in each of the first 2 segments, to lead Martin by nearly a lap at that stage! Pole-qualifier Josh was also well in contention at halfway, just about 20 feet behind Martin. However, that’s about as good as it got for these guys. Ross had one or 2 big shunts and lost time with a couple of pit-stops to fix the braids properly. Nothing so dramatic for Josh, but he fell a couple of laps behind Martin’s pace in the 3rd segment, and even setting a lap record of 4.108 seconds in the final segment couldn’t stop him losing a bit more by the end. Josh finished 2nd overall, about 3 laps down on Martin. Will took 3rd, Gordon 4th and Ross 5th. Gordon was top Main Grade in this class.

 Clubman Grade

Top Clubman Grade driver was Gavin in Saloon and Sports, Nick in F1.

 Main Grade

Richy was a convincing winner of the Main Grade trophy, coming 1st in Saloon & F1 and 3rd in Sports. Other Main Grade podiums were Gordon 1st in Sports & 2nd in Saloon, Gavin 2nd in Sports & 3rd in Saloon, Ant 2nd in F1, and Nick 3rd in F1.

Overall

We awarded trophies for the first 3 overall, counting each person’s best 2 classes, similar to how BOC championship points are awarded. Third on that basis was Ross with 1st in Saloon & 3rd in F1, but we had a tie between Martin (1st in Sports & 2nd in Saloon) and Josh (1st in F1 & 2nd in Sports). The tie-breaker is positions in the other class. Remember Josh struggled a bit in the Saloon final? Well, he finished 10th in Saloon. And remember Martin had trouble in the F1 final, dropping to 11th but climbing to 9th by the end? Well, that 9th place was priceless and will lead to Martin’s name being added to the Legends inscribed on the Gateway Trophy that we’ve been awarding for Victor Ludorum at the Ecurie Barnton Open for the last 30 years.

Finally, a big shout out for Paul Lyon, who very generously donated several prizes of brushless motors and other accessories for us to award to the trophy winners. Paul was the first winner of the Gateway Trophy, way back in 1987!
